Kei Cars for Sale from Japan

A kei car (kei jidosha, 軽自動車) is Japan's smallest legal vehicle class: maximum 3.4 m long, 1.48 m wide, 2.0 m tall, with a 660 cc engine capped at 64 hp. Created to make car ownership cheap in Japan — lower tax, insurance and parking requirements — the class spans city runabouts (Suzuki Alto, Daihatsu Mira), tall-boy family boxes (Honda N-BOX), and cult sports cars (Suzuki Cappuccino, Honda Beat, Daihatsu Copen). Modern kei cars go to markets without age caps; 25+ year classics go to the US under the exemption.

Is it legal to import?

United States

Kei cars follow the same federal rule as every JDM import: 25+ years from manufacture and the car is FMVSS-exempt and importable — that's 1990s Altos, Miras, Cappuccinos and Beats today, NOT a modern N-BOX. Duty is the 2.5% passenger-car rate. State registration is smoother for kei cars than kei trucks, but a handful of states still apply kei-specific restrictions — check your DMV.

Australia

Modern kei cars are generally not SEVS-listed, so the realistic route is the 25+ year concessional RAV pathway (1990s–2000 builds). ROVER approval before shipping, 0% duty under JAEPA, 10% GST. Kei sports cars like the Cappuccino have a strong ADR-compliance history through this route.

United Kingdom

The friendliest major market: no age cap, 10+ year cars are IVA-exempt, 0% duty under CEPA, 20% import VAT (5% for 30+ year historics). A 2014–2016 N-BOX or Alto imports cleanly today; kei cars register as normal passenger cars and are ULEZ-compliant if petrol Euro 4+.

Buying guide

Which kei car should you buy?

Match the car to the mission. City economy: Suzuki Alto or Daihatsu Mira e:S — the cheapest real cars on sale anywhere, 25–30 km/l in town. Family duty: Honda N-BOX (Japan's best-seller for most of the last decade) — sliding doors, Honda Sensing, and interior space that embarrasses cars a class up. Fun: the ABC kei sports trio (Autozam AZ-1, Beat, Cappuccino) and the Daihatsu Copen, all now cult classics with prices to match. Everything on this page comes from the same licensed auction access with the same translated-sheet process.

Kei car grades and mileage, honestly read

Kei cars are city cars, so odometers run low but stop-start wear runs high. Grade 4+ with 40–80k km is the value zone for modern keis; grade 3.5 is fine when deductions are cosmetic. On the sheet, watch for CVT judder notes (common on hard-used city cars), front-end repair marks that could disturb driver-assist sensors on N-BOX-era cars, and — for the 1990s sports keis — originality: unmodified, accident-free examples carry all the value.

What a kei car really costs to run

The class was designed around cheap ownership and it delivers outside Japan too: 660 cc means minimal fuel, tiny tyres, cheap brakes, and insurance rated on value rather than power. The engineering is conventional Japanese small-car fare — timing chains on modern engines, well-documented service items, and deep parts supply through Suzuki, Daihatsu and Honda global networks. The only structural caution is the same as all older JDM stock: rust history on snow-prefecture cars.

How the import actually works

Tell us the model, grade and budget; our licensed dealer checks live USS auctions (Members Card L-1525, held through AVON INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD., Japan corp. no. 1800-01-102810), returns real candidates with translated auction sheets and a plain-language risk read, and bids only with your approval. Small cars ship efficiently — RORO or shared container — and the door-to-door bands above already include freight, taxes and port charges for each market.

Frequently asked questions

What is a kei car?

Japan's smallest vehicle class: max 3.4 m long, 1.48 m wide, 660 cc, 64 hp. Created by regulation to make ownership cheap, it spans hatchbacks, tall-boy family cars, vans and even mid-engine sports cars. About a third of all cars sold in Japan are kei class.

How much does a kei car cost?

At auction: clean modern Altos and Miras from about $3,000–$5,000 FOB; a 2017+ Honda N-BOX runs $5,000–$10,000; 1990s US-eligible keis start near $2,000, with collector sports models (Cappuccino, Beat, AZ-1) well above. Door-to-door, use the bands above — they include freight, taxes and port charges.

Are kei cars legal in the US?

Yes, at 25+ years old — the same federal exemption as any JDM import, at the 2.5% car duty. A 1999 Alto Works or Cappuccino imports today; a 2020 N-BOX does not (it cannot be registered for road use until 2045). A few states add kei-specific registration quirks; check your DMV.

Are kei cars safe?

Modern kei cars are engineered to Japan's current crash standards and most (like the N-BOX) ship with radar/camera driver assistance — genuinely safe city cars. 1990s keis offer 1990s safety in a very small package; treat them as classics, not commuters. There is no honest way around that trade-off.

Can kei cars go on the highway?

Yes — they are highway-legal in Japan and cruise at 80–100 km/h; turbo grades hold 100+ comfortably. They are happiest in town and on B-roads. If your commute is daily high-speed motorway, buy a compact instead; if it's city and suburban driving, a kei is ideal.

How much does it cost to import a kei car?

Hammer price + Japan-side fees + RORO freight ($1,350–$1,800 depending on the market) + import taxes (2.5% duty to the US; 10% GST in Australia; 20% VAT in the UK, both with 0% duty under their Japan trade agreements) + $500–$900 port/broker charges. The bands above stack it all at real rates.

What is the best kei car?

By sales and by packaging, the Honda N-BOX — Japan's best-selling vehicle for most of its run. By value, the Suzuki Alto / Daihatsu Mira twins. By desirability, the 1990s ABC sports keis and the Copen. Our catalog below covers the modern picks; the classic sports keis we source on request.

Why are kei cars so cheap in Japan?

Japan's shaken inspection regime and dense supply push older cars out of the domestic market early, and kei cars exist specifically to be cheap to own. The result is a deep auction supply of low-mileage, well-serviced small cars — the arbitrage that makes importing them worthwhile.

Do kei cars have automatic transmissions?

Almost all modern kei cars are CVT automatic; manuals survive in vans, trucks, base Altos and the sports models. On the auction sheet the transmission is explicit, and we filter to your preference before shortlisting.

Are kei cars reliable?

Extremely, by design: conventional Suzuki/Daihatsu/Honda small-car engineering, low stressed 660 cc engines (watch turbo service history on the quick ones), and parts everywhere. The failure points are the same as any city car — CVT wear from stop-start abuse and cosmetic rust — and both show up on a properly read auction sheet.
