JDM Cars for Sale from Japan

JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) cars are the versions built and sold for Japan's home market — right-hand drive, often with engines, trims and special editions never exported. The ones buyers import are the icons: Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32, R33, R34), Toyota Supra (A80 and A90), Honda NSX, Mazda RX-7 FD3S, Nissan GT-R R35, Fairlady Z and the Toyota 86. Every week Japan's member-only auctions list hundreds of them with an inspector's grade and condition map, and prices there are wholesale — the listing sites abroad buy at the same auctions and add their margin. In the US the 25-year rule decides what can enter; Australia and the UK have their own routes, explained below.

Is it legal to import?

United States

Federal law (49 USC §30141) lets any vehicle 25 years or older, counted from its month of manufacture, enter exempt from FMVSS safety standards; the EPA emissions exemption applies at 21 years. That makes every R32 and R33 GT-R, the A80 Supra and the NA1 NSX importable today, and the R34 GT-R is arriving month by month through 2027 as each build date turns 25. A short list of newer models can enter under the Show or Display exemption with a 2,500-mile-a-year cap. Titling is a state matter: most states register a 25-year import normally, while California adds its own CARB compliance process for cars newer than 1975. Passenger cars pay 2.5% duty.

Australia

Vehicles 25 years and older qualify for concessional Registered Automotive Vehicle (RAV) entry without full ADR compliance — the route for R32/R33 GT-Rs, A80 Supras and early NSXs. Newer JDM models must be on the SEVS eligibility list and go through a Registered Automotive Workshop, so check eligibility with us before you fall in love with an R35 or A90. A ROVER import approval is required BEFORE the car ships, and pre-2004 cars need an asbestos declaration. Duty is 0% under the Japan–Australia agreement, GST is 10%, and Luxury Car Tax applies above the LCT threshold.

United Kingdom

The UK has no age cap, so an R35 GT-R, A90 Supra or RZ34 Fairlady Z is as importable as an R32. Cars over 10 years old skip IVA type-approval; you notify HMRC via NOVA within 14 days, pay 0% duty under the UK–Japan CEPA with origin paperwork plus 20% import VAT, then register with the DVLA. Cars over 40 years old can be registered as historic vehicles, exempt from VED and MOT.

Buying guide

Which JDM car should you buy?

Match the car to the budget and the rulebook, not the poster. An R32 GT-R is the entry point to the RB26 world and the cheapest way into a genuine Skyline; the R33 is faster, roomier and still undervalued; the R34 is the collector's car with prices to match. The A80 Supra RZ with the 2JZ-GTE and a six-speed is the safest appreciating buy; the NA1 NSX is the one you can drive daily. Rotary FD3S RX-7s are the lightest and the most demanding to own. For a modern JDM car, the A90 Supra, R35 GT-R and RZ34 Fairlady Z are strong buys for the UK and other markets without an age rule.

Reading the auction sheet on a 30-year-old sports car

Grades 4 and above are rare on these cars and worth paying for; a well-kept grade 3.5 is normal and a grade 3 can be right if the deductions are cosmetic. Two things matter more than the number. First, the repair grades — R and RA mean accident repair, which cuts value hard on a collector car. Second, modifications: Japan's inspectors mark aftermarket turbos, ECUs, suspension and body kits, and a grade 1 means the car has been mechanically altered or stripped for the track. We also read the mileage line — *** next to the odometer means the reading is unconfirmed — and check for export-history and odometer records before you bid.

The checks that decide a JDM purchase

Every icon has a known weak point. RB26 GT-Rs: ceramic turbine wheels on stock turbos, rust in the strut towers and rear arches, and a service history for the timing belt. A80 Supra: the 2JZ is close to indestructible, so the money is in originality — genuine RZ, six-speed, unmolested interior. NA1 NSX: the 1991–92 transmission snap-ring recall range and the timing belt and water pump interval. FD3S RX-7: compression numbers on the rotary, and cooling and turbo-seal history. Modern R35s: launch-control history and transmission service. We translate the sheet, flag these items and give you a plain-language risk read before any bid.

How the import actually works

You tell us the model, grade ceiling and budget; our licensed dealer checks the live USS auction system (we hold USS Members Card L-1525 through AVON INTERNATIONAL, a Japan-registered exporter, corp. no. 1800-01-102810), sends you real candidates with translated sheets and a risk read, and bids only after you approve a ceiling. After the win the car is deregistered, gets its Export Certificate and is shipped RORO or, for high-value cars, in a container — about two to six weeks on the water depending on your port. You pay duty and port charges at arrival; our door-to-door figures above already include them.

Frequently asked questions

What does JDM mean?

JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market: cars built for sale in Japan rather than for export. They are right-hand drive and often carry engines, trims and limited editions — the RB26 Skyline GT-R, the NSX Type R, the Supra RZ — that were never sold abroad. Buying JDM means buying the original Japanese-spec car, usually straight from Japan's auctions.

Are JDM cars legal in the US?

Yes, once they are 25 years old, counted from the month of manufacture: US federal law then exempts them from FMVSS standards and, from 21 years, from EPA rules. Every R32 and R33 GT-R, A80 Supra and NA1 NSX qualifies in 2026, and R34 GT-Rs are becoming eligible build-month by build-month through 2027. Registration is a state decision — most states title 25-year imports normally, California adds its own CARB process.

Is the R34 Skyline GT-R legal in the US?

Progressively. The R34 GT-R was built from January 1999 to August 2002, so cars pass the 25-year mark month by month between 2024 and 2027 — a car built in September 2001 becomes eligible in September 2026. A few R34 variants were also approved earlier under the Show or Display exemption with a 2,500-mile annual cap. Tell us the build month you want and we will confirm eligibility before we bid.

How much does a Skyline GT-R cost in Japan?

At the auctions, a clean R32 GT-R currently hammers in the tens of thousands of dollars, an R33 a little more, and R34 GT-Rs start near six figures with V-spec II Nür cars several times that. Prices move week to week with the yen and the calendar, so the model cards on this page show our current bands and we quote live before any bid.

How much does it cost to import a JDM car?

On top of the hammer price: Japan-side auction and inland fees, deregistration and export certificate, ocean freight (roughly $1,350–$1,800 RORO to the US West Coast, Australia or the UK — more for a container), marine insurance, import duty (2.5% in the US; 0% duty + 10% GST in Australia, plus LCT on expensive cars; 0% duty + 20% VAT in the UK) and port/broker charges. Our door-to-door bands above stack all of it, using our audited calculator engine.

What is the 25-year rule?

US federal law (49 USC §30141) exempts vehicles 25 years or older, counted from the month of manufacture, from FMVSS safety standards — the practical gateway for JDM imports. The EPA emissions exemption applies at 21 years. In 2026 that means cars built in mid-2001 or earlier are eligible; each month another batch of R34s, JZA80 Supras and later NSXs turns 25.

Can I import a modified JDM car?

You can buy one, but modifications cut both ways. Aftermarket turbos, ECUs, coilovers and body kits are marked on the auction sheet, and a grade 1 means mechanical alteration or a track car. Heavily modified cars are worth less to collectors, can fail Australian compliance, and in California still have to pass CARB. Our advice for an investment-grade purchase is stock or lightly modified with the original parts included.

How do I know the mileage is genuine?

The auction sheet's mileage line is the first check: a *** or ☆ next to the reading means the inspector could not confirm it. We also compare the reading against the car's inspection (shaken) history and previous auction appearances, and we tell you plainly when a car's history has gaps. On a collector car, a verified odometer is worth paying extra for.

Do you ship JDM cars to the UK and Australia?

Yes. The UK has no age cap and takes modern cars like the R35 GT-R and A90 Supra with 0% duty and 20% VAT; Australia takes 25+ year cars under the RAV concession and newer models only if they are SEVS-listed, with a ROVER approval required before shipping. Our bands above cover both, and the calculator pages cover 120+ other countries.

How long does shipping from Japan take?

After the auction, deregistration, export inspection and booking take one to three weeks in Japan, then RORO sailings run roughly two weeks to the US West Coast and Australia and five to six weeks to the UK. High-value cars can go in a container for extra protection at a higher rate. We send tracking and the original documents by DHL before the ship arrives.
